الأفعال المركبة (phrasal verbs) هي فعل + حرف، ومعناها غالباً مختلف عن الفعل لوحده. للمشاكل بنستخدم كتير: break down (يتعطل): The car broke down. run out of (يخلص عنده): We ran out of petrol. be cut off (ينقطع): The electricity was cut off. turn on / turn off (يفتح / يقفل). sort out (يظبّط ويحل). look into (يبحث في المشكلة). put up with (يستحمل). بعض الأفعال بتقبل المفعول في النص: turn the light off أو turn off the light. لكن لو المفعول ضمير لازم يبقى في النص: turn it off.
